Photo Stop: Drakenstein Prison. In 1982 Mandela was transferred from the maximum security prison on Robben Island, a small island in Table Bay, to Pollsmoor Prison in Tokai, Cape Town. From there, Mandela was moved to the then Victor Verster Prison on 9 December 1988, where he lived in a private house inside the prison compound. Victor Verster, a farm prison, was often used as a stepping stone for releasing lower-risk political prisoners. Mandela served another 14 months at Victor Verster (Now called Drakenstein) Prison until his release on 11 February 1990. On the day of his release, reporters from all over the world surrounded the prison, giving the prison worldwide publicity.

The Paarl Wine Route, which is the second oldest in the country, is known for its full-bodied spicy reds and crisp whites. Shiraz is the most important varietal from the area, but Paarl wineries also produce remarkable chenin blanc, chardonnay, pinotage, viognier and mourvedre.
Remember all that history we mentioned earlier? Here’s what you need to know. In 1657, a chap called Abraham Gabemma set out from the Cape in search of resources. On his journey he came across a giant granite rock gleaming in the distance. He called the mountain Pearl Mountain, and the town that grew at its base eventually became known as Paarl. This big rock is fairly significant as it is the second largest granite outcrop in the world.
Main Street drive with its different styles of architecture, pictures que avenues and scenic beauty forms part of the tour where after a vineyard is visited to sample some of the best wines the country can offer.
