Castle of Good Hope

The oldest standing colonial building in South Africa. Built between 1666 and 1679 this is probably the oldest colonial building built by the Dutch in the world.
Built to serve as the Headquarters at the Cape and also for defensive purposes. Served as the main administrative office of the respective governments at the Cape between the Dutch and the British.
Was used as the main residential place of the highest order of respect at the Cape. Was also used as a court to try cases, a prison to jail those convicted including solitary confinement.
It also served many different purposes as the respective governments saw fit. Since 1936 it has been declared a national monument and part of it is now owned by Th South African Defense forces. There is also a section used for art and much more.
