Sugar-hill North Harlem Tour Of New York City

The storied Hamilton Heights/Sugar Hill plateau overlooking upper Harlem developed around the historic 18th- and 19th-century country estates of such notable figures as Alexander Hamilton and Madame Eliza Jumel, whose houses still bookend the district. This area also became known as Sugar Hill, where “life was sweet” for many professional African-Americans who moved to the area in the 20s and 30s.

    Things to know before booking:

    This tour focuses on neighborhood history. It does not include visit to church or music.

    Tours may be moderately difficult for the physically challenged.

    Please arrive 15 minutes prior to departure time. Please note that once a tour is in progress we cannot delay the tour for late arrivals or interrupt the tour guide so that latecomers can track him or her down since this affects the experience of people who are present.

    Remember to dress for the day’s weather and wear comfortable walking shoes, as we will be on our feet for most of the tour.

    Feel free to bring a bottle of water and light snacks along if you’d like.

    Reservation Changes, Cancellations & Refunds

    Changes to reservations for tickets can be made until 2 days prior to the date scheduled. Reservations may be re-scheduled by the operator of the activity due to reasons such as weather, minimum participation requirements, mechanical issues or other interruptions beyond their control.

    All gift certificate sales are final and not refundable. Gift certificates can only be exchanged prior to redemption.

    About Harlem One Stop

    Harlem One Stop is a cultural tourism initiative of the Hamilton Heights West Harlem Community Preservation Organization (CPO) which seeks to establish a one stop network for Upper Manhattan-Harlem-based tourism through alliances and strategic partnerships. The CPO partners with various arts and cultural organizations, retailers and restaurants to create a series of Harlem is Home tour packages. The CPO is a non-profit volunteer, community organization, active in the preservation of Harlem's architectural and cultural treasures. Through the promotion and sharing of local experience and knowledge, all partners seek to positively impact the delivery of services and neighborhood/business development in our respective districts and, throughout Harlem, in general.

    Harlem One Stop also partners with local arts and cultural groups, businesses and civic organizations to bring to residents and visitors a variety of events and tour packages that not only promote the more well-known venues in Harlem, but also the smaller, lesser known events, such as the annual Hamilton Heights and Mount Morris Park house tours, and Swing Dance classes and entertainment reminiscent of the Cotton Club and the Savoy in the 20s and 30s.

    Harlem One Stop is funded by a cultural tourism grant from the Arts & Business Council/NYSCA and is designed to boost tourism, strengthen Harlem/New York's ability to draw diverse visitors, give tourists a greater choice of authentic experiences and foster exciting collaborative opportunities to market ethnic and artistic traditions. "Traces, Faces, Places" represents the theme of Harlem One Stop tour packages. We invite you to participate in any one of our several exciting tours that draw on area history and take visitors behind the scenes to personally engage in the energy and excitement of the area's contemporary life.

    Any organization that produces entertainment events (performing & visual arts, sports, etc.) can send events for inclusion in the calendar, providing that they are not adult oriented and are open to the general public.
