FAQ

Activity FAQs

Weather Cancelations

Sunset Sail Key West will not sail in unsafe weather conditions, such as heavy rain, thick fog, high winds, thunder and lightning ect. However we will sail in overcast conditions, light fog, and in intermediate sprinkles. The final decision to sail resides on the captain. If the captain decides it is unsafe to run the trip, Sunset Sail Key West will do its best to reschedule you for another sail during your stay. A full refund will be issued if the captain cancels the trip due to unseafe weather conditions. If you have a confirmed reservation and choose not to sail because of weather and the boat still sails, you will be charged a minimum of 20% up to a maximum of the full ticket price depending on the season.

Here are some FAQ’s to help with planning your charter:

Will I get a sunburn?
The sun out on the water is brighter than on land as it reflects off the water. So we highly recommend using some sunscreen at least 30 SPF or greater. Also wear protective clothing if you are prone to sunburn. And don’t forget some polarized sunglasses.

What wildlife will we see?
It’s the ocean and the wildlife is as diverse as you will find anywhere. Every trip is different and what you may see will vary. We have dolphins, manatees, tarpon, sharks, barracuda, turtles, and many species of bird life. The reefs are full of exotic tropical fish and corals. As to what you might see cannot be predicted nor guaranteed, our experienced crew will do their best to point out any interesting wildlife that you may encounter during your charter. Keep a camera handy.

Are children welcome?
Yes. Sunset Sail Key West is kid friendly. All children must be supervised by an adult for the duration of the trip. Children 6 and under will be asked to wear a lifejacket while onboard which will be provided.

Can I sail the boat?
Everyone will get a chance to man the helm to get a feel for what it’s like to sail. Weather and traffic permitting of course.

What about weather?
The captain always checks the weather before sailing. If conditions are bad and the charter cannot go, we will give you the option of rescheduling for another day. Summers are hot with the occasional thunderstorm rolling through and light winds. Fall is one of the nicest times to go with milder temperatures and less rain. Winter is our windy season, great for sailing. Remember to bring a light jacket or sweater as it can get chilly on the water. Spring is a lot like fall with the winds calming down later in the season.

What about hurricanes?
We get plenty of advance warning should a storm threaten the islands. They are rare and are not something to worry about. The Keys have a system in place to warn us of any impending danger and a plan to evacuate if necessary.

Will I get seasick?
Some people are prone to motion sickness. We do our best to keep the vessels sailing steady and to make sure everyone is comfortable. There are over the counter remedies you can take if you think the motion may bother you, remember to take it at least 45min before sailing.

Can we bring alcohol on board?
Yes. You are welcome to bring any adult beverages of you choice. We have coolers stocked with ice to store your drinks and keep them nice and cold.

Which is the better boat, CONCH WEST or HIGH TIDE?
Depends on what you want to do. High Tide is good for short trips. There is plenty of room on the deck for everyone and it’s a fun boat to sail around. CONCH WEST has room below deck and is ideal for overnight and special occasions like weddings and such. Let us know what you want to do and we can suggest which boat would be the better fit.

Is there cell phone signal while we are out on the water?
For the most part, yes. As long as we are in sight of Key West, you should have some signal although that can change due to weather conditions. Longer trips like our over night may mean being out of cell phone range. We will always remain in VHF radio range allowing us to call for help should there be an emergency.
