Coconino National Forest

1824 S Thompson, , Flagstaff, 86001-2693, Arizona

Spanning nearly two million acres, the Coconino National Forest surrounds Flagstaff with a stunning mix of ponderosa pine forests, ancient lava flows, volcanic craters, and alpine meadows. It’s one of the most ecologically diverse forests in the country, with elevations ranging from 2,600 to over 12,000 feet. As you ride through, you’ll experience everything from shady woodland corridors to wide open clearings with panoramic views. Wildlife sightings are common, and the cool mountain air makes it a perfect summer riding destination.

1 hour, 30 minutes

Lava River Cave

Coconino National Forest, , Flagstaff, Arizona

Formed nearly 700,000 years ago by molten lava flowing underground, this mile-long lava tube is one of the longest in Arizona and a fascinating natural wonder. The entrance drops you into a pitch-black volcanic tunnel where temperatures stay around 42°F year-round, offering a stark contrast to the forest above. Though the cave is not part of the UTV trail itself, a quick stop here gives groups a chance to stretch their legs, explore the entrance, and snap photos of this surreal geological feature.

30 minutes

Parks

Parks, Arizona

Located roughly midway between Flagstaff and Williams, Parks is a quiet, high-country community known for its wide meadows, ponderosa forests, and rustic ranchland. Though small, it marks an ideal spot to take a break, swap drivers, and enjoy the peaceful scenery. You'll pass near the edge of this region on your route—keep an eye out for elk grazing in open fields or hawks circling overhead.
Sections of the original Historic Route 66, slowly being reclaimed by nature, will be visible here. Old oil cans, bottles, and relics from bygone travelers can still be found on the forest floor.

45 minutes

Kaibab Petroglyphs

Kaibab National Forest, Williams, 86046, Arizona

A short hike from the Oak Hill trailhead takes you to a narrow basalt canyon filled with ancient rock art created by the Cohonina people over 1,000 years ago. The carvings include animals like deer and snakes, along with abstract symbols believed to have cultural or spiritual meaning. The canyon also features a seasonal waterfall, adding to its serene and mysterious atmosphere. Though you'll park the UTVs to reach it on foot, the trail is easy and well worth the stop for history lovers and photographers alike.

45 minutes

Williams

Williams, Arizona

Williams is a vibrant town filled with Route 66 charm, historic architecture, and western personality. It’s known as the “Gateway to the Grand Canyon,” and still feels like a step back in time with neon signs, saloons, diners, and railroads. It's also a perfect midpoint for your ride—a chance to grab lunch, refuel, and explore. Don’t miss the vintage storefronts and classic cars that line the main street—it’s a small but memorable piece of Americana.
