Join us for a fascinating exploration of Britain's most northerly islands- Yell & Unst.
Far closer to Oslo than London, the islands' strong ties with Norway are immediately visible through centuries of Viking history.

You'll see beautiful beaches, unspoilt scenery where sheep outnumber people 10 to 1, dramatic castles and experience intriguing Viking heritage whilst hearing tales from your knowledgeable local guide.

The Old Haa

Brough Road, Burravoe, ZE2 9AY

Leaving Lerwick, we travel to Toft (aprox. 45 minutes) to join the inter-island ferry for the short crossing to Ulsta on Yell (20 minutes).
From Ulsta, we drive to Burravoe to visit the Old Haa Museum, a local museum telling the story of Yell, housed in a historic house with beautiful gardens.

There is a tearoom on site should you wish to purchase refreshments.

Gloup Disaster Memorial

Gloup

Continuing north through Yell, we pause at Gloup Memorial dedicated to the lives of 58 fisherman lost at sea in a storm on 20th July 1881.

Muness Castle

From Gloup we make the short journey to Gutcher to join the inter-island ferry for the short crossing to Belmont, Unst (10 minutes) from where we journey to Muness Castle on Unst's east coast.
Built for Laurence Bruce of Cultmalindie – a prominent figure during a turbulent time in Shetland- who was accused on oppressing local people, the castle is a stunning example of tower house architecture.

Haroldswick

We continue north through Unst to the village of Haroldswick where we stop for an included light lunch at Victoria's Vintage Tearooms.

Unst Boat Haven

Island of Unst

The Unst Boat Haven explores the island’s relationship with the sea, from the important role the fishing industry has played over the centuries to the leisure pursuits of inshore fishing and sailing races.
Highlights include a Viking longship and traditional Shetland and Scandinavian boats.

Located in Haroldswick, Unst Heritage Centre guides guide you through the role of industry, crofting, knitting, education, religion and Unst’s unique position in the defence of Britain. The highlight is seeing a replica Viking longhouse.

Retracing our steps by ferry to Yell, we make a stop at scenic West Sandwick beach, one of Shetland's most serene and peaceful sandy beaches.
Please note any time unaccounted for is spent driving between locations.
