At-Home Experiences: Online Colombian Cooking Class

Most of us are thoroughly fed up of lockdown, and are looking for new ways to jazz up a weekend or another evening stuck in the house. An online cookery class is a fun and affordable way of spicing up dinnertime, and will introduce you to exciting new dishes!

The Colombian Cookery Class hosted by Daniela taught us how to make traditional deep-fried empanadas, cheesey fried arepas, plantain patacones and two sauces; suero and hogao. The ingredients were simple and easy to find (although note to British readers – cornflour in Colombia is not called cornflour here!), and we made an abundance of food mostly using items we already had in the house.

Rather than simply following what Daniela was doing on the screen like a video tutorial, she actually got involved with what we were making and asked for regular updates (holding a laptop screen over a pan of boiling oil is a bit scary), offering tips and recommendations if something didn’t look quite right. This is what sets apart an online experience to a pre-recorded class!

With guests from the UK, USA and South America, we met some great people and had a lot of fun seeing how everyone’s empanadas turned out. I’m keen to check out more online cooking lessons, and will definitely try the recipes again with the right flour this time!
