At-Home Experiences: Online Candle Making Workshop

Candles come in all different scents, sizes, and shapes – for example, naked body candles are the new craze at the moment, but I think people just use them for display as they are far too pretty to burn in my opinion!

So I was thrilled when I got the opportunity to join a candle making workshop, as I am obsessed with lighting a candle after a long day. There’s something extremely satisfying about tidying your room, and finally getting the chance to sit down and enjoy the flicker and fragrance of the candle.

When purchasing the ‘Stay at Home with Earl - Online Candle Making Workshop’, the kit included soy wax, an amber jar vessel with attached wick and lid, botanical oils, an extra wick for another use, whisk, jug, personalised label, safety label and a peg.

All I needed for the workshop was a pan and a bowl to sit on top. There was a choice of 4 different fragrances including woody, oriental, fruity, or fresh. The fresh scent was described as freshly cut grass, citrussy and bright. This helped me make my decision, as I love the smell of a fresh cut field in the summer. As the weather is so bad at the moment, I figured this would keep me going until the warmer weather rolls around!

When joining the Zoom call everyone was very lively, which was lovely to see in these difficult times. There were 35 people taking part in the online workshop - a great turn out. Throughout the workshop, people could unmute themselves and ask questions which made the class more interactive and interesting. The candle making workshop lasted roughly 45 minutes, during which time I learned some interesting techniques and facts about scents. For example, did you know that scent is 70% of taste?

Once the candle was made and ready to set, the Earl of East team were on hand to answer any questions, or if you wanted to stay for a chat via Zoom. We were told to allow our candle to set for at least 2 days in order for the scent to reach its maximum potential. After the candle had finally set, it was time to trim the wick and then light my incredible fresh scent candle. The candle would allow me 45 hours of burning time, and I even had leftover wax and fragrance to be able to make another one when this one runs out.

The online candle making workshop was fun, interactive, and relaxing. However, I can’t help but feel that the experience is overpriced for the steps involved and the length of the session. That being said, I will definitely be lighting my candle and sipping on a tea in the evenings for the foreseeable!

Thanks for reading.
