At Home: Drag Dance Choreography

Like many people, I have been watching Ru Paul’s Drag Race for some time now, and have developed a massive love for the drag queens and the art behind the whole drag industry! So, when I came across this drag-inspired dance cardio class I just knew I had to get involved!

Host Rory created “Roryography”, which is a follow-in-the-moment dance/aerobics fitness class. Rory has worked with world-famous drag queens such as Bianca Del Rio, Trixie Mattel, Bob the Drag Queen & Alaska, so it was no secret that he was an expert in drag choreography.

Usually these classes would run at the International Terminal of SFO & onstage at the Castro Theatre in San Francisco, so I was super excited that I had the opportunity to participate from the comfort of my own home!

Before the class, I was sent an email notifying me of the equipment needed. A sense of humour, fabulous workout clothes and an optional wig and cape. Unfortunately, I didn’t own a wig or a cape, but I definitely  brought my sense of humour!

Rory was so welcoming and wanted to get to know a bit more about us all before our dance class started. We began by learning some choreography to the iconic “Jump” by The Pointer Sisters. It was so much fun! Rory brought so much energy to the screen, you couldn’t help but smile!

We did plenty of different choreography throughout the 60-minute session, which kept things exciting. I think Roryography might be my new favourite form of exercise!

For one of the dances, Rory told us to grab a cape as they would be part of the next routine. Thinking on my feet, I grabbed one of my blankets and wrapped it around me like a cape. It definitely did the job, although it may not have looked as good as Rory’s…

Throughout the class, Rory would interact with us, and taught us ways to bring out our inner drag queen! We learned the iconic drag saying “this is my hair!” and heard about some of his amazing celebrity drag queen encounters.

Towards the end of the class, Rory told us we had 60 seconds to put together the best drag outfit we could find. We turned our cameras off and the timer began. I was frantically running round my house, trying to find an outfit that would be extravagant enough to impress the drag expert himself. I ended up with a cowboy hat and a faux tiger strapped onto my back! Pretty extravagant if you ask me.

Once the minute was up, we turned our cameras on one by one and got to model our outfits to the rest of the group, strutting our stuff to the music and of course, taking a fierce selfie. Rory was impressed with all our outfits and even invited us to come meet him if we were ever in San Francisco. I will definitely be taking him up on his offer!

This was such a fun night in and was a brilliant mood booster! I would love to join this class again with some of my drag queen fan friends, to see if their drag queen outfit would be any contender for mine…
