Initially known as Eichmannreferat IV D4 and later as Judenreferat, SS-Obersturmbannführer Adolf Eichmann led it. Berlin was home to Germany's largest Jewish community before the rise of the Nazi regime. The Jewish population of Berlin in 1933 was approximately 160,000, making up over 32% of all Jews in Germany. However, due to Nazi persecution and the subsequent emigration, this number fell to about 80,000 by 1939. The Jews in Berlin, like those throughout Germany, faced increasing discrimination, persecution, and violence, especially after the Nazis came to power in 1933.
