Karlsruhe Pyramid

The Karlsruhe Pyramid is iconic. The Pyramid marks the tomb of Margrave Charles III William (Karl Wilhelm von Baden-Durlach), the founder of Karlsruhe. In 1715, Charles William established Karlsruhe as a new city, centered around his palace. The Pyramid was built over his final resting place, symbolizing the city's origins and honoring its founder. The Pyramid is an example of Egyptian Revival architecture, which became popular in Europe in the 18th and early 19th centuries due to fascination with ancient Egyptian culture.

The Karlsruhe Palace (Karlsruher Schloss) is directly linked to the founding of the city. In 1715, Margrave Charles III William of Baden-Durlach built the palace in the middle of a forest clearing. The Karlsruhe Palace is at the center of a rare urban design in Europe: The city was laid out in a radial plan, with streets fanning out from the Palace.
