The Welland Canal is a man-made waterway that connects Lake Ontario to Lake Erie, bypassing the Niagara Falls and allowing large ships to travel between these two great lakes. The canal stretches for 27 kilometers and includes eight locks, allowing vessels to navigate the varying elevations of the water.
Opened in 1833, the Welland Canal is considered one of the great engineering feats of its time and continues to be a critical part of the St. Lawrence Seaway.
