Brighton Bathing Boxes Association Inc.
Esplanade, Brighton Beach, Brighton, 3186, Victoria
The Brighton Beach Bathing Boxes are one of Melbourne's most iconic and photographed landmarks. Located along the shoreline of Brighton Beach, these charming, colorful wooden structures date back to the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Originally built as changing rooms for beachgoers during the Victorian era, they have since become a symbol of Melbourne's coastal heritage.
There are 82 bathing boxes in total, each uniquely painted in bright colors, stripes, and creative designs, making them a vibrant backdrop against the turquoise waters of Port Phillip Bay. By law, the boxes retain their traditional structure—they have no electricity or running water and must adhere to strict heritage guidelines.
Today, the bathing boxes are privately owned (with long waiting lists for purchase!) and are highly sought-after real estate. Visitors flock to Brighton Beach to admire these picturesque huts, take photos, and enjoy the scenic coastal views.
