Experience Overview:

Washington Dc Monuments Full Moon Photography Tour In Arlington

Here is your chance to capture that traditional postcard-view of the three famous monuments – Lincoln Memorial, Washington Monument, and the Capitol, all neatly aligned in your viewfinder in the soft light of twilight and with a rising full supermoon, all from the vantage-point of the Netherlands Carillon, right next to the Iwo Jima Memorial in Arlington VA.

Your professional architectural photographer will coach you in the single-exposure and (if your camera can do it) double-exposure techniques of twilight and moonlight photography on this safari, timed to coincide with the sun setting and the full moon rising, followed by nighttime shooting of the newly refurbished Marine Corps Memorial soldiers framed against the rising moon. If your camera does double-exposures, we will show you how to move the moon from one corner of the sky to place it right over the Washington Monument! How cool is that?

You must bring a sturdy tripod, cable release also desirable.

Details & Important Info

Additional Experience Details & Important Information

Participants must bring their own camera, tripod, lenses, extra memory cards, extra charged battery, and any accessories such as filters and remote release.

Which photography techniques will be emphasized?

At each point on our Safari the guide will review techniques of composition, exposure and lighting. The guide will place a great deal of emphasis on good composition, i.e. aiming the camera in the right direction and pushing the shutter button at just the right time.

What camera equipment do I need?

Any camera will do - from point-and-shoot to digital SLR or mirrorless camera. We will even show you how to get the best images out of your smartphone camera. For best results we suggest that your camera have its kit lens (such as the 18-55mm) a wide angle lens equivalent to about 28 mm (in 35 mm format), a circular polarizing filter for SLR's, a telephoto of at least 100mm, and enough media and batteries for about 100 exposures. It is advised to not leave any lenses at home.

You should also learn how and when to put your photos into black and white for some of the subjects.

What if it rains?

Please don't get discouraged if it is cloudy or rainy that day. Some of the memorials even look better in the rain! (For example, the soldiers at the Vietnam Three Servicemen Memorial will have tears running down their cheeks as they see their own names on the Vietnam Memorial.) Just bring an umbrella.
