Why We Love This Unique Experience

San Diego Experience Gifts: Enjoy the best whale watching in San Diego on this amazing two hour and a half hour cruise.

See whales in their natural habitat on this awe-inspiring San Diego boat trip. Board the roomy vessel and grab a spot in the outdoor seating area or in the open viewing spaces on the upper or lower decks. From December to April, gray whales migrate south to the isolated lagoons of Baja California to mate and give birth and are often sighted just a few miles from the coast! From May through to November, blue whales and fin whales can be seen feeding along the deep-water banks of the bay, and throughout the year, humpback whales, minke whales, common dolphins, Pacific Bottlenose Dolphins and Risso’s Dolphins can be seen, as well as California sea lions, sharks and a diverse range of birds. Basically, it’s always a great time of year to go whale-watching here! Your experienced crew know all the whales’ favourite spots and are full of wonderful wildlife facts to share with you. Whale-watching as the sun goes down is a truly magnificent spectacle, so don't forget your camera!

This whale-watching cruise would make a super experience gift for a birthday, special date, or anniversary and is a must for your next vacation in California.

FAQ

Activity FAQs

ARE WHEELCHAIRS ALLOWED ON BOARD?

  • We do allow manual wheel chairs on board. Unfortunately, due to the weight of an electric wheel chair, we cannot have one on board. Our crew members need to be able to lift the wheelchair from the dock to the boat, and will do so prior to boarding the remaining passengers.

DO YOU ALLOW ALCOHOL ON BOARD?

  • Unfortunately, we do not allow guests to bring alcohol on board, however our galley is stocked with beer, wine, and champagne.

YOUR SCHEDULE DOESN'T GO OUT FAR ENOUGH

  • We operate year round! Our schedule is posted a few months in advance. As soon as we have our schedule set it will be posted and available for booking. Our fall schedule (Sept -Nov) will be out by August 1st!

IS THERE PARKING?

  • We do have ample free parking available in our lot.

WHAT TIME SHOULD I ARRIVE TO THE BOAT?

  • We require guests to check in 45 minutes prior to departure to ensure the boat is able to depart on time.

WHAT SHOULD I BRING WITH ME AND WHAT SHOULD I WEAR?

  • We suggest bringing a camera and extra layers of clothes, such as a light jacket. The temperature on the water is about 10 degrees cooler than it is on land, and it can get chilly when the boat is moving. Also, you will want to wear comfortable shoes. Our crew all wear closed toes shoes with a good grip on the bottom and we suggest the same, but wear whatever is best for you and your feet.

DO YOU ACCEPT CREDIT CARDS ON BOARD?

  • Unfortunately, the Privateer is a cash only vessel. If you are interested in making a purchase in the galley, please make sure to bring additional cash with you. There is also an ATM conveniently located inside of Seaforth Landing where you check-in, in case you have forgotten cash.

WHAT HAPPENS IF I GET SEASICK?

  • Although an uncommon occurrence, it happens! We will do everything in our power to make you comfortable. However, the best offense is a good defense. Prior to your trip, take seasickness pills (we sell them aboard the ship, in case you forget) and get a good night’s rest. If you start to feel sick, stay outside, near the stern of the boat, where it’s more stable. Find a spot on the horizon and keep staring at it, to help regain your coordination. Nibble on some plain crackers and drink some ginger ale. If none of this helps, and you are about to lose your lunch, just lean over the railing and feed the fish. Please do NOT use the bathrooms. If we hit a swell and you hit your head on the toilet, our crew will have difficulties getting to you to administer first aid. Our crew is here to help, so if you aren’t feeling 100%, let us know. We will do everything we can to make your trip as enjoyable as possible! All crew members are first aid and CPR certified.

CAN I BRING MY PET ONBOARD?

  • Unfortunately, we don’t have the facilities for your pet to come with us! However, all service animals are welcome aboard. They must have their ADA paperwork and/or tag visible.

WHAT IS THE BEST TIME TO SEE WHALES?

  • Anytime!!! We are lucky to have whales of the coast of San Diego Year Round!!! Join us in the winter for our Gray Whales and the summer for the Blue whales. In between and all year we have Fin, Minke, and Humpbacks!

San Diego Whale Watch

The first company in San Diego to offer whale watching all year long!

San Diego Whale Watch offers the premier whale watching experience in Southern California.

Our experienced crew know exactly how to track down and show you the amazing whales and dolphins off of San Diego’s beautiful coast. Your whale watching cruise is available at an affordable price on our fantastic boat, the Privateer. She is the first boat in San Diego used solely for whale watching.

Also, we are the first company in San Diego that offers whale watching all year long. Not only that, but when you go with us, you are guaranteed a good time with our legendary whale guarantee. If you don’t see a whale or a dolphin on your trip, you can join us for free on another tour.

OUR PURPOSE

Our purpose at San Diego Whale Watch is simple, to help educate about our waters. San Diego Whale Watch started as the only year round whale watching company in San Diego with the mission of bringing people and our Pacific wildlife together. Many residents of Southern California are aware of the gray whale migration that happens during our winter months but very few know of the blue whale migration in the summer. Our goal is to ensure our community is able to experience our wildlife year round while learning something along the way.

OUR BOAT

The Privateer began her early years in Provincetown, MA (the extreme tip of Cape Cod) as the first ever whale watching boat on the East Coast!! Though she was built as a whale watching boat, she was originally used as a sport fishing boat. However, the fisherman spent more time marveling over whales in the ocean that they changed the focus of the boat to solely whale watching. After 10 years in Provincetown, MA the Privateer moved to a new home in Gloucester, MA. And after 28 years of providing countless magnificent whale watching memories on the east coast, the Privateer decided to make a move to warmer weather. Just recently, in May 2011 to be exact, she made the 4 week voyage down the Atlantic and through the Panama Canal to be a part of our San Diego family. With a large platform she can hold 149 guests and provides the smoothest ride on the ocean. The Privateer has roomy outdoor decks which allow for tons of viewing space. She is equipped with the state of the art electronics and is Coast Guard certified for your safety. Be a part of the Privateer’s splendor and make your own magnificent memory.
